Join us in the coming weeks as we explore herbal folklore, stories of the Silvani, with Guido Masé. As we pass into the seasonal festivities and approach the winter solstice, we are reminded of ritual and tradition. The time honored tradition of storytelling gives gifts of insight, mystery, and allure from a world unknown to us. Since the art and craft of herbalism has strong roots as an oral tradition, we felt it appropriate to share some aural folk tales with you. In the coming weeks we'll release five short videos highlighting a few of Guido Masé’s cherished stories of the Silvani in this mini-series on Herbal Folklore. Guido Masé is a clinical herbalist, storyteller, and author of such books as DIY Bitters. Herbal tales of Rue, Nettle, […]
You may have heard about the resurgence in returning to diets higher in fat. Ever since learning about this trend, I’ve been experimenting with ways to add fat back into my diet. I especially enjoy the luxury that a boost of fatty goodness can bring to a cold morning. While I used to only drink my coffee black, I’ve lately become accustomed to using a teaspoon of butter or a tablespoon of whipping cream. Thanks to a wonderful office-mate, who brought in an almond milk creamer the other day, I’ve been intrigued by the idea of finding more dairy-free, vegan alternatives. Their store-bought almond milk creamer tasted like an almond latte but without the artificial flavoring. It was delicious and just as rich and complex as […]

I’ve gotten a few tattoos in my day and always question the quality of those over-the-counter ointments I'm handed at the tattoo parlor. Of course, the artists are trying to keep us safe while healing, but who needs petroleum products after that kind of skin trauma? We all know that taking sweet care of your tattoo after getting inked helps improve the life and vibrancy of the artwork. Why not skip the pre-packaged stuff for some herbal infused oils and non-GMO vitamin e oil woven together with beeswax and moisturizing botanical butters? This recipe is the best treat for your skin to protect that new piece! Botanical Tattoo Balm Recipe Ingredients 1 Tbsp organic calendula infused oil 1 Tbsp organic plantain infused oil 1 Tbsp organic Oregon grape root infused oil (learn how to make your own!) 2 Tbsp organic refined shea or organic cocoa butter 1 Tbsp beeswax 1 tsp non-GMO […]
When I lived in Culver City, California, I had a free membership to a small yoga studio, which was a lovely perk of working in the neighborhood. This precious little studio had just a few teachers who knew each student personally, and my practice there was guided through many special moments. Not only was this studio filled with people who were kind, open, and understanding of the journey, they also curated the front room with the most incredible handmade, earth-conscious products. They offered beautiful pink rose amethyst to ground and bring love to your life, they sold sustainably crafted yoga wearables, and a wonderful bottle of all-natural yoga mat cleaner that I fell in love with despite its price. That bottle of organic witch hazel mixed with organic essential oils worked incredibly well. Cleansing my mat with this spritz of aromatherapy became part of my practice. Unrolling my mat […]
Okay, I’ll admit that I still occasionally crave the sweet, bubbly flavors of my favorite childhood sodas. Typically these cravings happen during special moments of postcard-like perfection, when for some reason, my taste buds feel the need to celebrate. Summer is ripe with these moments, and now I’ve got an amazing herbal solution… Homemade Root Beer Syrup! If you're on the hunt for a natural soda recipe, you probably already know the benefits of avoiding all those sparkling cans and bottles of pop. Generally packed with more sugar than anyone needs in an entire day and lots of strange artificial ingredients, these formerly botanical-based soft drinks are no longer so easy to enjoy. Thankfully, bringing the old-timey flavors back is as simple as making tea. Also, this recipe uses honey rather than white sugar. For a more neutral taste, you […]
I like to feel fresh and confident during the hot summer months, but hate worrying about synthetic ingredients. With consumer awareness growing to avoid nasty chemicals on our sensitive underarms, natural deodorants have become one of the most desired personal care products. While there have been lots of "natural" options on the market over the years, many popular brands are now manufactured by larger umbrella companies that might not have your ethics at heart. Thankfully, there are herbal ingredients that really work! While not antiperspirants – because sweating is actually healthy for us – some botanical ingredients can help you feel secure in any temperature by deterring the growth of heat-thriving underarm bacteria. That's what inspired me to create a recipe for a solid deodorant that I love many moons ago! My new liquid roll-on recipe below is especially nice when you forget to […]
As we slowly come out of winter to welcome spring, our skin has been exposed to a long, harsh season of blustery cold. My lips feel neglected and chapped from dodging rain and chilly air, bouncing from cold and damp to warm and dry. My delicate lip skin, if not properly protected and moisturized throughout the season, always starts to peel. Trying to rub away the dry skin can feel gratifying and helpful, but quickly results in cracked lips when a little TLC is really what's needed. Lip scrubs are the answer! Perfect for this time of year, this easy to make recipe is gentle and leaves your kisser feeling smooth and soft. Great for exfoliating the dry, excess, weathered, skin on your lips, while moisturizing and restoring thanks to pure botanical oils and butter. Such a sweet treat for your skin, your lips will be happy all spring. NOTE: […]

As a self-identified busybody, I need to recharge each day through special moments of solitude. Sipping herbal infusions, taking walks outside, and enjoying a fresh spritz of plant scents can help stimulate focus when I feel myself fading. Aromatherapy is a wonderful practice that can be used to gently alter your current state. Like the pleasant hum of a bell, scent can bring you back to the present moment and remind you of your intention. This awesome blend of hydrosol and essential oil keeps me levelheaded and inspired when I need it most. Bay Laurel has long been associated with scholarly pursuits, and offers a sweet, rich, invigorating aroma. When combined with rosemary for memory, clary sage for calm, and just a bit of uplifting citrus, this mist becomes a warm, floral, sweet, and delicately musky blend that's sure to keep you in positive spirits, especially when the […]
