Photo Thursday!

Meet our winter friend, Snow Herbie! With a cardamom smile, rose bud nose, cinnamon stick arms reaching out for a hug, and two eyes made out of star anise, this sweet buddy was created by our staff members Meghan and Miriam to help keep spirits bright during a rare snow storm at Mountain Rose last week. Pretty darn cute!

Many of these ingredients don't have to be listed on the labels, but are known allergens, hormone disruptors, and irritants. The majority have never even been studied for cosmetic use! This is pretty scary, but the good news is that we can easily create our own perfumes using natural ingredients. Here are three of our favorites. Woodland Perfume This blend truly smells like […]

Mama & Baby’s Massage Oil

Selecting the best products and ingredients for skincare can be daunting, and baby’s skin is even more delicate and sensitive than our own.  The lists of ingredients on baby care products are often a mile-long and contain hard-to-read and unrecognizable ingredient names.  Many commercial baby care products even include toxic ingredients that have been linked to allergies, cancer, developmental problems, and organ dysfunction, in addition to many other harmful side effects. No thanks! This soothing and gentle massage oil is perfect for nurturing mama’s and baby’s sensitive skin.  Apply after bathing for massages, cradle cap, or anytime that skin feels dry.  You can also pour a small amount into bathwater for a luxurious pampering bath. Fruit & Flower Frozen Tea Pops

Warm weather calls for swinging in the hammock and sipping ice tea, but when it gets really hot, slurping on a popsicle is an even better treat.  While I love me some popsicles, I know too much to feel good about the typical sugary, colored offerings available at the grocery store. It occurred to me that I could combine my love of great, organic herbal tea with my love of frosty frozen desserts and come up with healthy, refreshing, and fun recipes for folks of all ages.  I am thrilled to share a few of my best recipes! There are a few things to know as you make popsicles from tea, whether using my recipes or as you get inspired and create your own: • You need to make the tea about three times as strong as what you would normally drink. Use more tea and let it steep a […]

Celebrating Hops: Two Sweet Treats

With a Latin name as fun as Humulus lupulus, why not use hops to make some unique confections? Many years ago, a customer sent us a bag of homemade hop flavored hard candies. Much to our surprise, they were really delicious! The combination of floral, bitter, and sweet sang together in a very pleasant way, and soon many of us were unwrapping and enjoying them throughout the day. We love hops here in the Pacific Northwest, especially as beer connoisseurs in search of the perfect IPA, but the medicinal properties make this herb valuable to herbalists as well. A classic calming herb used to encourage relaxation and sleep with a hypnotic quality, its effect can be felt after sipping tea, drinking a pint of beer, or taking some tincture. The bitterness is also helpful for stimulating digestion and appetite. These two recipes were inspired by a visit to our beautiful organic hop farm (you can read about that here), […]

Wild Rose Conserve & Saving the Sweetness of Spring

Our farewell to spring post celebrating roses from Kiva Rose Hardin is here! Her beautifully written articles marry the personal with the scientific, lore with experience, offering untamed and fresh insight. Herbalist, wildcrafter, artist, and storyteller, Kiva Rose lives in a canyon botanical sanctuary within the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico. She is also the co-director of the Herbal Resurgence Rendezvous, held each September in the mountain Southwest, coeditor of Plant Healer Magazine, and publisher of the just released historical novel, The Medicine Bear by Jesse Wolf Hardin, and maintains an herbal blog, The Medicine Woman’s Roots.     Spring in the botanical sanctuary where I live is heralded each year by the return of dozens of species of birds returning to the mountains of New Mexico from more southerly climes in Texas and Mexico. The liquid song of the thrushes, the rising crescendo of canyon wrens, and the […]

Herbal Egg Dye

Let’s color some eggs! Nature is waking up with the colors of spring and our backyard hens have been getting their egg-laying motors running, just in time for Easter.  This year, I wanted to explore what sort of colors I might be able to create using readily-available dried herbs and spices.  It was an experimental adventure—some colors were subtle, others surprised me, and there were a few that just didn’t quite turn out. I came away with some gorgeous eggs though, confident in the natural ingredients and the fact that I wouldn’t be eating anything toxic or dumping icky-soaked shells into my compost – not to mention inspired ideas for about 2 dozen more herbs and spices to try! Basic Egg Bath and Dye Recipe Ingredients 2-4 Tbsp dried herb or spice (up to ¼ cup for the “fluffy” herbs like Calendula flowers) 1 Tbsp organic white vinegar 2 cups hot water […]
