We are excited about this brand new addition to our line of essential oils – certified organic Vitex essential oil. This powerful essential oil comes from the distilled fruit of the vitex or chaste tree. Vitex is considered a balancing herb for women. In fact, it is said to support physical and emotional health during a woman’s menstrual cycle and in the transition into menopause, relieving mild mood changes, occasional cramps, water retention, and hot flashes.* This essential oil can be included in a diffuser blend or used topically. While Vitex is not typically used within perfumery, it can add interesting notes to a blend. Vitex is quite strong, and should be diluted before being applied to the skin. Do you adore cacao as much as we do? We are excited to introduce organic roasted cacao shells to our collection of organic herbs and spices! Cacao has a long and colorful history as a beloved plant beginning in Central and South America before 1500 BC. The entire cacao fruit was used and considered sacred by the Mayan, Olmec, and Aztec civilizations. Mayans believed that the gods discovered the cacao tree in a mountain offering a plethora of ambrosial delights. According to this mythology, the Plumed Serpent gave cacao to the Maya after the divine grandmother goddess Xmucane created humans from maize. Cacao beans were used for both a ritual beverage and a major currency system in pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations. The generic name of this plant reflects its extraordinary esteem, as Theobroma comes from two Greek words meaning “food of the gods.” So, what are cacao shells? This […]

A classic ingredient for chest rubs and steams, eucalyptus is an evergreen tree native to Australia that has become naturalized in California and the Mediterranean. Its leathery blue-green leaves are studded with glands containing a fragrant, volatile oil that is camphoraceous and cooling. There are many species of eucalyptus trees, but the most pleasant-smelling oil is produced by Eucalyptus globulus. Eucalyptol is the major volatile oil in eucalyptus leaf, and while eucalyptus oil boasts around 70% of this compound, it is also found in other herbs at lower concentrations of 1-5%. We are excited to introduce organic eucalyptus leaf powder to our offerings. This aromatic powder is milled from carefully dried eucalyptus leaves. The special drying process preserves the potency of the oil content, making both our cut leaf and powdered eucalyptus high-quality ingredients for your needs. For many moons, our loyal customers have been dreaming about Organic Roasted Dandelion Root Powder, and we are happy to report that it is finally here! Dandelion is an amazing plant that has been used for thousands of years in China as a restorative tonic, edible food, and in herbal wines and beers. Dandelion root is a favorite amongst traditional herbalists as a nutritive bitter. The plant’s genus, Taraxacum, is derived from the Greek words “taraxos” meaning disorder and “akos” meaning remedy, which is a not-so-subtle reference to the high opinion ancient Greek healers held for this herb. Dandelion was also widely used by the indigenous cultures of North America where it grows prolifically. Our Roasted Dandelion Root Powder starts as freshly dug dandelion roots. After harvesting, the dandelion roots are dried, chopped, roasted, and ground into a fine powder. This powder is often steeped in hot water to […]

Nettle (Urtica spp.) is one of my all-time favorite herbs. Yep, that weedy plant that stings! This nutritious botanical can be cooked, steamed, baked, pickled, brewed into tea or beer, and it can even be made into hemp-like rope, woven into fabric, and used as a natural dye. Stinging nettle grows wild throughout North America. They usually grow in the same places every year, so once you find a good stand, you can return to it every year or grow it in your garden. Look for nettles in rich soil and partially shaded areas, often in moist forests, along rivers, and in disturbed areas. It’s important to harvest the plants from clean and unpolluted areas, not in industrial or agricultural areas, roadsides, or where pesticides have been sprayed. The plants will absorb heavy metals and other impurities, so harvesting them in an uncontaminated area is of utmost importance. Spring is […]
