We’re excited about the newest addition to our herbs and spices: organic grapefruit peel! Grapefruit is a bit of an anomaly in the world of citrus. Not even 300 years old, it was thought to be the byproduct of a horticultural curiosity gone awry at the time of its discovery. Though no record exists to prove it, scientists theorize that the grapefruit is a delicious cross between a pomelo and a sweet orange. The grapefruit made its way to Florida in 1823, and today, the U.S. is the world’s leading producer. The common name refers to the way the fruit clusters on the tree in a similar fashion to a bunch of grapes. Interesting botanical tidbit! We love this grapefruit peel in tea blends, ground for a body scrub, added to bath salts, and many other body care recipes that call for a sweet and tart hit of citrus. […]
Do you adore cacao as much as we do? We are excited to introduce organic roasted cacao shells to our collection of organic herbs and spices! Cacao has a long and colorful history as a beloved plant beginning in Central and South America before 1500 BC. The entire cacao fruit was used and considered sacred by the Mayan, Olmec, and Aztec civilizations. Mayans believed that the gods discovered the cacao tree in a mountain offering a plethora of ambrosial delights. According to this mythology, the Plumed Serpent gave cacao to the Maya after the divine grandmother goddess Xmucane created humans from maize. Cacao beans were used for both a ritual beverage and a major currency system in pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations. The generic name of this plant reflects its extraordinary esteem, as Theobroma comes from two Greek words meaning “food of the gods.” So, what are cacao shells? This […]
For many moons, our loyal customers have been dreaming about Organic Roasted Dandelion Root Powder, and we are happy to report that it is finally here! Dandelion is an amazing plant that has been used for thousands of years in China as a restorative tonic, edible food, and in herbal wines and beers. Dandelion root is a favorite amongst traditional herbalists as a nutritive bitter. The plant’s genus, Taraxacum, is derived from the Greek words “taraxos” meaning disorder and “akos” meaning remedy, which is a not-so-subtle reference to the high opinion ancient Greek healers held for this herb. Dandelion was also widely used by the indigenous cultures of North America where it grows prolifically. Our Roasted Dandelion Root Powder starts as freshly dug dandelion roots. After harvesting, the dandelion roots are dried, chopped, roasted, and ground into a fine powder. This powder is often steeped in hot water to […]

Turmeric has been riding a wave of popularity in the world of natural products, but it has been enjoyed in India for its benefits since ancient times. This Turmeric Chai boasts a spicy and strong aroma with a hint of earthiness. Your taste buds are sure to be stimulated by the complex […]
We are absolutely in love with our new Tropical Guayusa tea blend! The lush notes of coconut and lemongrass have us all feeling transported to paradise. Guayusa is the dried leaves and stems of a South American rainforest holly that’s a close botanical relative to the more well-known Yerba Mate. A tall tree native to the Upper Amazon, Guayusa has only rarely been collected by botanists and is known almost exclusively as a cultivated plant. Indigenous hunters often make an infusion of Guayusa leaves to help keep them awake and alert. There’s also anthropological evidence that this herb may have been traded, as famous Harvard ethnobotanist Richard Evans Schultes found a 1500-year-old bundle of guayusa leaves in a shaman’s tomb high in the Bolivian Andes, which is far beyond the plant’s natural range. Our new blend featuring this incredible tea is deliciously smooth and fruity. The organic Guayusa gives […]
