Best Recipes of 2011 Giveaway!
Welcome to 2012 everyone!
Have you made a New Year’s resolution yet? Well, we’ve got a really good one for you! This year, resolve to make your home sparkling clean - with the power of herbs!
It’s the final week of our DIY HOLIDAY GIVEAWAY series…
As a big thank you to our readers, we’re revisiting the best recipes from our blog in 2011 and giving away a huge package of organic ingredients each week so the lucky winner can make these herbal goodies at home!
Week 4 ~ Green Spring Clean!
Making your own cleaning solutions using just a few basic ingredients is super easy, inexpensive, and much healthier for your home and for the environment. Commercial cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that can irritate the skin, burn the eyes, and sting your lungs. Once the scrubbing is done, these toxic products are washed down the drain, poisoning the water, land, and wildlife we cherish. Plus, all of the extra packaging ends up destined for the recycling bin…or the landfill.
These awesome recipes will make that transition from store bought to homemade super easy! I’ve been using them for a few years now and can’t imagine going back. They will replace those conventional cleaning products in your cupboard for good!
The Recipes
Super Surface Spray
• 16 oz. spray bottle
• 14 oz. – 1:1 solution of distilled white vinegar and water
• 7 drops of tea tree essential oil
• 7 drops of lavender essential oil
• 7 drops of lemon essential oil
Use this aromatic and disinfecting solution for cleaning kitchen counters, cabinets, refrigerator shelves, blinds, painted wood surfaces, painted walls, molding, fan blades, and more.
Herby Soft Scrub
• 12 oz glass jar with lid
• 1/2 cup baking soda
• 1/2 cup castille soap
• 15 drops of antimicrobial essential oils like rosemary and sage
Mix well until you have a nice consistency like cake frosting. If you have leftovers, add 1 tsp vegetable glycerin to keep the blend nice and moist.
Antibacterial Soap Spray
• 16 oz spray bottle
• 14 oz. water or rosemary hydrosol
• 3 tbsp castille soap
• 15 drops of tea tree essential oil
• 15 drops of oregano essential oil
Use this cleaning spray to disinfect your bathroom surfaces. You can use the Super Surface Spray to rinse away any residue left behind by the castille soap.
Refreshing Linen Spray
• 16 oz. spray bottle
• 3 oz. unflavored vodka
• 12 drops lavender, ylang ylang, peppermint, orange or your favorite smelling essential oil
• 12 oz. organic hydrosol of your choice
Spray to refresh your mattress, pillows, bed linens, couches, and fabric covered chairs, or spritz clean winter blankets before storing for the year. Also makes a wonderful ironing spray!
Natural Lemon Furniture Polish
• 16 oz spray bottle
• 1 cup olive oil
• 25 drops pure lemon essential oil
• 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar
• fill remainder of the bottle with purified water
Shake well before each use. Spray onto your rag or directly onto furniture. Buff dry immediately.
Tropical Carpet Deodorizer
• 1 cup of baking soda
• 10 drops of lemongrass essential oil per cup
• 10 drops of sweet orange essential oil per cup
• 10 drops of ginger essential oil per cup
Mix together and sprinkle the aromatic blend onto your carpet, let sit for 30 minutes, and vacuum as normal. Wonderful mattress deodorizer, too!
Lemony Wood Floor Mop Formula
• 20 oz. spray bottle
• 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
• 1 tsp. vegetable glycerin
• 20 drops lemon essential oil
• Water
Spray, mop as usual, and quickly buff dry to protect your floors. They will be glossy and clean with a lovely lemon scent!
Mop-It-Up Formula
• small glass bottle
• 1/4 cup castille soap
• 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
• 20 drops of tea tree essential oil
• 20 drops of sweet orange essential oil
This is the perfect liquid cleaner for tile floors, vinyl, or linoleum. Mix the solution with 2 gallons of hot water and mop away the dirt and grime.

All natural cleaning.. this is what lead me to Mountain Rose Herbs in the first place. Mountain Rose Herbs is a great company and I’m so glad I found you!

My herbal new years resolution, is simply to continue to educate myself on living naturally, and continue making more and more of these wonderful products myself.
My herbal new year’s resolution is a pretty big one! To become a Master Herbalist. Currently enrolled in a home study program and studying my arse off. SO excited to make a special herbal pantry in my house and stock it with Mountain Rose herbs!
jen7maples at gmail dot com
My family’s new year’s resolution is to go from using store bought “green” cleaning supplies to using homemade natural and healthy cleaning supplies. In that spirit, I’ve also subscribed to your company’s youtube channel and newsletter.
My pre-new year resolution (I got a head start last month) is to alternate my daily coffee with tea to get the benefits and enjoyment of both, and to end each day with an herbal/mushroom tea. So far so good!
I am on the way to natural cleaning, but so far am limited to baking soda and vinegar and the few essential oils I have. I would llllluuurv to have this so I could make my transition complete and be done with the toxins!
My herbal New Year’s resolution includes the cliche of taking care of myself and getting into better shape, but since I am now pre-menopausal, I have resolved to take the appropriate herbs to help balance my hormones, support my bodies optimal functioning and ease any symptoms.
This looks amazing!

I want to change my family’s cleaning products over to things that are easier on my allergies than commercial products and herbal cleaning products are what I’m looking for!
I have been making my own cleaners, but am looking for some new recipes to replace some that aren’t my favorite. These look wonderful! I think incorporating essential oils into the cleaners will make a big difference! I’ve been changing eating habits, elimination of cleaners, striving to eat local, real, foods, and natural remedies and prevention over the past three years. This year, exercise! A major missing link! Sure would be blessed by this generous giveaway!!
I went personally went vegetarian but I also cleaned out my entire kitchen and my whole family is now eating way healthier, all organic when possible. I have been using mostly all natural cleaning products for a while but New Years Eve, my husband and I cleaned out our cleaning products! They are now ALL naturally made. This was our “Green New Years”. Its pretty different but we are all very excited about the changes (except my toddler who isn’t so much about the healthy food, but he’ll get used to it..lol).
Well I’m on the look out for *real* extra virgin olive oil so I’m not going to have any olive oil that might be adulterated. Also, I’m making my own skin cleansers now. Go me!
Always love to make my own herbal cleaners, etc!!

My goal this year is to find a source or harvest my own seaweed grown off the coasts of the Pacific Northwest. I live in Oregon and would pay a premium for safely-harvested, local seaweeds.
Also, for my business, I am looking to find more sweet hot chilies. I’m looking for the depth of flavor found in some Korean chilies that have a meaty sweetness to them. To have these chilies available in an organic form would solve a HUGE problem for me, and I would buy them in volumes.
And my renewed commitment to MRH is to buy as many of my production-related spices as possible from your company. I consider MRH a partner in my business, and I’m grateful to you all.
I’m excited about this I already had my new years resolution to not eat any more processed foods…now I’m not going to use any processed cleaning products…We already make our own laundry soap….I’m looking for a dish soap reciepe now..I’m sharing your giveaway link to face book too…thank you for all the recepes I’m excited to share them

My new years resolution entry: is to empower and inspire as many people as I can – I envision a world with an herbalist (who works hands on with the plants- building a relationship- getting their hands dirty and out in nature) in every home! I am creating many more classes and plan to easily double my herb walks/ presentations this year- as well as attend/ teach at at least 1 conference!
My resolution is to share herbal DIY workshops starting next month. This would be a very helpful kit for my workshop:) I would love to win it!!! Thank you!
Shared on Facebook:)
A big hello to all of you at Mountain Rose Herbs! First things first, I sort of decided my resolution before the new year was even here. This year starts the first full year that my fiance and I are on our own & I want to make sure I get us started out on the right track. This means not only am I making sure we’re getting out to enjoy the fresh air, but I’m also making sure we switch to natural organic foods (no more processed, chemically added to nonsense). Your company has allowed me to start making the right choices with all of the products that you offer!
It hit me around the beginning of December that the stuff I use to clean with is almost as toxic as the foods we were eating! Just in time to save us is this giveaway! I’ve never won a thing in my life so I’m hoping that my desire to change our lifestyles and help others do the same via blogging, is enough to win. (But good luck to everybody!)

People need to realize that every perscription they put into there body gets flushed back into the earth and gets recycled into everyone’s water supply same with harmful cleaning supplies. That is why the water supply has so many hidden components you wouldn’t believe until you go in your local water departments website and see the results of the tests. I vow to only use natural products and medication to keep the earth and it’s people healthy.

Hello mountainroseherbs and readers. Recently I’ve become an outspoken advocate of natural alternatives to highly toxic and harmful cleaning supplies not only out of concern for the environment, but out of necessity. I’ve been affected by a full spectrum of health problems (ranging from respiratory problems, asthma, liver and kidney damage to cancer) related to my line of work- I was a housekeeper through a few name-brand cleaning services for 20 years. This was before the bigger cities began to offer green/environmentally friendly services. I’ve racked up more medical bills than I would have ever made enough money to pay for. After years of being exposed to the industry standard cleaners- ammonia, bleach, carpet, oven, and toilet bowl cleaners, and various other unnatural products that have somehow come to represent a convoluted standard of cleanliness, I have come to realize that sacrificing ones health for this idea of “clean”, even in the name of employment, is simply not worth it. I am pushing for the industry standards to be reconsidered and am interested in providing examples of affordable alternatives to local companies, but hefty medical bills have kept me from realizing many of my advocacy goals. I hope to get other housekeepers who are experiencing medical problems because of industry standard toxic chemicals to speak up and demand that their employers provide safer alternatives. I think what you are doing is wonderful both for the environment and the people and creatures who live in it and would like to do all I can to make sure consumers and other housekeepers know their options and can make the switch to natural products before another persons health is compromised. This gift package would be a big help in getting me on the road to my goal of advocating for a healthier industry standard for housekeeping businesses and as we know, every bit helps in these times. Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you so much for sharing your story! This is a very serious health issue that is often overlooked. Sending our best wishes to you and keep up your important work to educate the industry! <3 Erin
resolution- to get back into my herbal medicine studies,, I’ve been slacking for a while.

already subscribed and shared on fb. I LOVE making my own cleaners – after my DH lost his kidney for no reason I decided to take out as many toxins in the house as possible and go natural. You are an amazing resource to me and have amazing products!
I am 60 years young and feel it’s never too late to learn! I have always been interested in issues pertaining to health and over the years, have come to realize how much our health depends on everyday chemicals we expose ourselves to. I am chemically sensitive and have made my own laundry detergent for several years and am always looking for more ways to reduce my chemical exposure. I love that Mountain Rose Herbs shares so much of their valuable knowledge to help others to that end!

Just starting ordering from Mountain Rose Herbs and it is wonderful! Everything one would need to make the switch to homemade, organic products is here. Green products are so expensive so I started looking for ways I could make products myself. This kit is a perfect starting point!

Thank you for wonderful recipes! After making my own skin care products with essential oils, which is very addictive, this year I plan to continue my aromatherapy study, extend my herb garden, make household products and formulate remedies using herbs and eo’s.
A new year brings hope to change and renew. The winter solstice is a way to celebrate what has passed and to feel and celebrate the end of an era and embrace the new start. The changing of the seasons are so important to our way of being. It is where we come from. For me, most of the time the rain can remind of home. The sun is not as bright without the rain and the new is not ‘as’ welcome without saying goodbye to the old. This year I want to open a herbal tea shop in a quiet place of Wales, welcome local culture of music and and craft to thrive there and enjoy the fruits of nature and its gardens. One who grows a garden grows happiness. Happy New year everyone, make the change happen, be the change, love the change. x

This year I plan to expand this practice to laundry soap. A certain famous internet MD, with whom I rarely agree but always read, wrote an article the other day about poisons present in laundry soap. I tried before making my own laundry soap, but had terrible skin reactions to the pink or yellow grated laundry bars in all the recipes I found. The web MD gave a recipe using grated bath soap. Since I have narrowed down bath soaps to only those that don’t make me itch or worse, I just might be successful this time. Your give-away gave me another nudge in this direction!
I also plan to start making my own lotions, salves, and lip balm again, starting with lip balm. Strangely, I got off track, when I started using Bert’s Bees again awhile back. I am a bee keeper myself with a good source of organic bee’s wax from my own back yard. But shame on Clorox for changing the recipes. How do I know they did? The last tube of lip balm I used made my lips swell up, crack, bleed, and peel. Gross and painful.

My herbal resolution is to drink more tea, and to use ONLY natural cleaning products… I do need advice for the toilet though!!
I reposted to facebook!
And I’ve been your youtube subscriber for a very long time already! And am just getting your newsletters! THanx so much for all you’ve done! Love you MOUNTAIN ROSE HERBS!!
There are so many reasons to ‘go green’ in cleaning products: health, allergies, the environment and the fun of being self sufficient!
Thanks MountainRoseHerbs for showing us how to be more self sufficient!
I already make so many bodycare products with ingredients bought from MountainRoseHerbs, and love them so much more than their store bought counterparts. This way I can control what goes in and what goes on….
It is just logical to extend that to cleaning products!
For the new year, I plan to shift away from many of the commercially produced products which contain harmful chemicals and more towards natural ones.
I’m so glad I saw this before the deadline! I would love to make these recipes and be able to gift some to friends! I have several of these essential oils, but they are above 2 years old now. Do you think they would still be usable in the recipes that don’t directly contact the skin?
I have posted a link on Facebook, tweeted about Green Spring Clean, and subscribed to the YouTube channel. I already subscribe to the newsletter.
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity!
I shared your giveaway link on my facebook page.
I love you guys! I already subscribe to the newsletter and like you on facebook and follow you on twitter, so I’ll leave a resolution here: I just graduated from nursing school in December and felt really torn throughout the program about the unidimensional approach to healing and definitions of health. So now that I’m out of school, I feel like I have a big responsibility to keep educating myself and those around me about their options. So my resolution is empowerment. Empowerment of patients by helping them realize their capacities to heal and their options outside of the big pharm realm. Of course, to do this responsibly and safely, I need to make sure my info and products are good! So I will further my herbal education this year with a correspondence course and will attend at least one herbal conference. Yay, Mtn. Rose for giving all of us outside Oregon access to your wonderful herbs and products and opportunities. Thank you! Happy 2012!
OK! So I posted to facebook, tweeted, and subscribed to the youtube channel (watched a couple cool videos along the way!). Cheers!

This year I resolve to make lotions for my family, and make and use more natural cleaners! I shared this contest on Facebook, liked your Facebook page and subscribed to the newsletter.
This Fall, I finally began teaching my grown children and in laws some natural skills. We made soap, lotion, face cream, eye cream and lip balm in one day! I have made soap for 26 years, and the lip balm was my daughter in law’s idea. It was fun, but more – it was purposeful, useful, economical and healthy. Now they are sharing what they know with others already. I call it Soap Evangelism
I would love to win this kit – and it would give me a great reason to have them all back for another weekend of learning!
Thank you for all you do and share. I love your products because they are organic.

This year I am becoming a first time Mommy. It is also been one year since I started to become more herbally minded. With both of those thoughts in mind, my new years resolutions are to be a good Mommy to my new little daughter, a good wife for my husband, and to learn more about and use more herbs in my family’s life for a healthier, less chemically dependent environment for us all to grow and live.

My New Years resolution is to get out of the military, move to Chattanooga, TN, and start living a more autonomous life.
One of my commitments this year is to use less chemicals and less packaging. Making cleaning products at home will really help! I just found this blog and I am excited to find the cleaning recipes. Can’t wait to try the soft scrub.
My new years resolutions are pretty simple, do what I love, drink more tea, do it natural, do it right and don’t succumb to the lure of a quick fix with bleach!
also posted about the giveaway on my FB account https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=753344106 although it is private.
I just signed up for your newsletter, and I’m really excited about trying these recipes. I’ve been making my own deodorant, toothpaste, lotions, and other beauty products for a few months now and I cannot believe how well they work (not to mention the money I’ve saved in doing so). I’ve been studying herbs for medicinal purposes and am really looking forward to dumping the chemical cleaning products and making my own (I have a few cats, so these recipes will be put to the test!). By the way, my health has never been better (I used to get bronchitis every year, but haven’t for the past two years!). Great blog; keep up the great work!

I have been cleaning like this for the past 2 years. I have found that in my bathroom, cleaner I use a few tablespoons of vodka(an inexpensive brand)as well as vinegar and some baking soda. The vodka helps cut through the grime in the tub. This last batch I used clove & orange oil as my scent a holiday blend. I love changing my scents for the seasons! Happy cleaning!

For the new year, I would like to build my supply of essential oils. I currently only have peppermint oil.
We use only white vinegar and baking soda to clean every thing in our home. It’s affordable, safe and effective. We switched to natural cleaners for many reasons, but one was because we have a toddler. I didn’t want him accidentally consuming anything that could harm him. All the harsh chemicals got tossed.
